Can kids join?
Of course! We welcome members of all ages and have an ever-increasing number of junior members. We work closely with parents / guardians to ensure appropriate training schedules and make the experience as much fun as possible. Time investment is a consideration – much like an afterschool activity such as sports training or match commitments. We place a huge emphasis on club values and do our utmost to ensure a family friendly and welcoming environment.

Is it an expensive hobby?
As with any hobby, you have an initial outlay that will have to include new equipment and club / governing body registration fees. Beyond that, expenses are low. Aircraft and radio gear can last years when taken care of, experienced members provide a lot of guidance on best practice maintenance. Repairs tend to cost a small amount in parts (glue, materials) but more in time invested! A lot of equipment is transferrable from one model to the next, such as radio gear & any sensors, batteries even motors.

Why do I need to register with MACI?
MACI is the governing body for model aircraft throughout Ireland. Crucially, MACI provide all pilots with insurance but also set out guidelines on training schedules. MACI work closely with the IAA to ensure that the hobby meets standards required to maintain EU regulatory compliance whilst protecting the core activities and its integrity. In turn, SRFC work very closely with MACI to promote the hobby and provide its members with a safe, enjoyable and cost effective hobby.
Why do I need to register with IAA?
Model aircraft pilots in Ireland need to register with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) for safety, accountability, and compliance with EU regulations. Ireland follows the EU regulations for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), specifically EU Regulation 2019/947. This regulation applies to drones and model aircraft over a certain weight or used in specific ways.
